Shocking security vision shows the moment a young man arrives at a petrol station with a metal rod protruding from his head.

In the CCTV video, obtained by TV station 3 News, the 23-year-old man appears surprisingly calm as he walks towards the counter asking for help.

Staff and customers at the Caltex service station in Katikati, New Zealand, initially thought it was a joke.

"I was like, 'Man is this a TV show? Is this guy for real?'," owner Lester Gray told 3 News. "It looked like a Halloween stunt where people wear those Halloween costumes over their heads, but it was pretty real when he turned around and blood was coming down the side of his head."

The victim was allegedly bashed and struck with the steel bar, which became lodged in his head, while he was parked in his car in a nearby street.

Incredibly, the victim managed to drive four blocks to the petrol station to get help.

"I don't think he realised he was so hurt," said Mr Gray. "But as you can see he was pretty nasty."

The victim was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery to have the rod removed.

He is now in a stable condition and is expected to return home within days.
