First birthday for baby Gammy
A spotlight was cast on baby Gammy once again yesterday - but this time it was not contentious.
The Thai baby caught up in a surrogacy scandal with links to WA celebrated his first birthday with family in his new Thai home.
Gammy, born with Down syndrome and a heart condition, was all smiles as his mother Pattharamon Janbua sang Happy Birthday.
Bunbury couple David and Wendy Farnell allegedly abandoned Gammy but brought his twin sister, who does not have Down syndrome, back to Australia this year.
The case sparked sympathy for the Thai family and their new home was bought through donations. Australian-based charity Hands Across the Water has been a vital part of the fundraising effort for Gammy who has undergone extensive medical treatment.
The Thai parliament has voted to ban commercial surrogacy.
A draft Bill, which proposes a 10-year prison sentence for anyone who profits from surrogacy, passed its first reading in the Thai parliament last month.
