Demolition vote for Taj-on-Swan

Four years after the collapse of Pankaj and Radhika Oswal's WA empire, a wrecking ball could be headed for their unfinished Peppermint Grove mansion.

The Shire of Peppermint Grove council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to seek a demolition order for the six-bedroom property - dubbed Taj-on-the-Swan - and to reject a proposal by the Oswal's solicitors to pay about $150,000 of outstanding rates in instalments.

Council chief executive John Merrick said the building brought constant complaints from nearby residents because of antisocial behaviour at the site. "It has deteriorated to a state where it's now dangerous and something needs to be done urgently," he said.

Mr Merrick said the property would be demolished as soon as possible, if the Oswals did not pay their outstanding rates in full.

The council's right to order a demolition has been complicated by the Australian Taxation Office's pursuit of Mrs Oswal over alleged unpaid tax.
