Drug king launches appeal

Marc Quaid, who received one of the longest jail terms handed to a drug dealer in WA, will appeal against his conviction and sentence.

After denying his part in a sophisticated, covert and massively lucrative drug syndicate for more than a year, Quaid acknowledged his guilt during his sentencing hearing last month - as well as pleading for "as much clemency as I can humanely appeal for".

Despite his last-minute plea for clemency, Quaid was sentenced to a total 23 years jail. .

Yesterday, Quaid lodged appeals against his conviction and sentence, claiming several errors by the judge.

Quaid was convicted on two counts of possessing methylamphetamine with intent to sell or supply, with his driver Roberto Zanon, after a major police operation uncovered a big stash of drugs at a Malaga warehouse last year.

The appeal will be listed for hearing next year.

It will claim that Quaid's conviction was unsafe and unsatisfactory, that the sentencing judge Bruce Goetze imposed a manifestly excessive sentence, and that Judge Goetze erred by making the sentences partly cumulative.
