Putin finds chill amid G20 heat

Russian President Vladimir Putin might have found just one Australian friend at the Brisbane G20 - a koala.

So angry was Mr Putin at the reception he received from fellow leaders that he departed the nation early - and avoided another lonely lunch - to head back to Moscow. Despite the oppressive heat, Mr Putin found chill wherever he went during his 41-hour stop in Australia.

After the diplomatic shirt front from Prime Minister Tony Abbott during last week's APEC leaders' summit in Beijing over the MH17 disaster, Mr Putin found other prime ministers prepared to confront Russia over its involvement in Ukraine.

British PM David Cameron faced off against Mr Putin in a 50-minute discussion that diplomatic officials euphemistically described as "robust".

"The point is and the reason for meeting is that this issue (MH17) matters and it's very important Russia understands what's at stake and gets a very clear message," Mr Cameron said.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Mr Putin that Russia should get out of Ukraine.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the European Union was considering more financial sanctions against Russia.

Mr Abbott, US President Barack Obama and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe demanded that those responsible for the downing of MH17 be brought to justice.

Mr Putin's only relief came when he had a koala hug him during a photo opportunity.
