Fire risk predicted to be 'severe'

A severe fire danger rating has been forecast for parts of the Pilbara again tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast the rating this evening, saying it would cover the eastern part of the Shire of East Pilbara.

A threat level of severe means bushfires can threaten suddenly and without warning.

The alert comes after several blazes tore across the Pilbara this week, threatening homes and lives and closing major roads.

Bushfire advice alerts are still active for Corunna Downs Station in the Shire of East Pilbara, Wickham and Roebourne in the City of Karratha, Strelley Station in the Shire of East Pilbara and Munda Station, 25km south of Port Hedland.

Monday evening proved tense for Wickham residents as the alert was increased to a watch and act. But by 8pm the same night firefighters had managed to reduce the risk. By 4pm this evening, however, the blaze was still considered "out of control and unpredictable" by DFES.

Another alert issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency services at 7pm this evening said residents should stay alert and watch for signs of fire, especially smoke and flames.

Residents are also urged to have their bushfire survival plan and kit ready, keep up to date with bushfire information through local radio, websites and TV and not to wait for a warning before you act. Anyone who sees flames should call triple zero.
