Green light for city food trucks

Food trucks will be trading in the City of Perth from February after council approved a four month trial.

As flagged by The West Australian, the city will trial allowing up to 10 food trucks to trade from a number of set locations from February 1 to May 31.

The locations have been chosen partly to avoid the trucks competing with more established brick-and-mortar restaurants, with a 50m radius given to existing food and beverage businesses.

None of the locations are in the CBD.

Trading will be allowed from 7am to 10pm seven days a week but trade at any one location is restricted to between three and five hours. One location in the James Street car park in Northbridge will be allowed to trade until 2am on Friday and Saturday night.

Speaking at the council meeting on Tuesday night, where the proposal was approved, Perth mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the limited trial would not “rock the world” but was a “fantastic start”.

“Globally this is a trend,” she said.

“I have observed this trend in the cities I’ve been visiting privately. I observed it in San Francisco earlier in the year and in New York.”

“I think it’s a great way for fledgling would-be restaurant owners to try out their cuisine ad have a go.”
