'Drunk speedster' lucky: police

Police say a 68-year-old man is “extremely lucky” to have not caused an accident after allegedly driving for almost an hour while drunk behind the wheel.

Police stopped the Busselton man’s Ford Ranger on Graphite Road, Glenoran, about 8.20pm on Sunday night after he was clocked travelling 15km/h over the 100km/h speed limit.

Officers administered a preliminary breath test, which the man allegedly failed. He failed a subsequent test at Manjimup police station and was charged with excess 0.08.

Police said the man was transporting firewood from Busselton to Manjimup and officers had stopped him about 95km into his 240km round trip.

Bridgetown police Sgt Danny Fenton said the man was lucky to get as far as he did without being involved in a crash.

“The length, circumstances, time and location of the journey undertaken by the man already had an increased risk compared to any other driving situation,” Sgt Fenton said.

“But add to that excess speed and a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit, this driver was extremely lucky to have got as a far as he did without a serious accident occurring.”

The man’s licence has been disqualified.
