Steady Olesen wins Perth International

Danish rising star Thorbjorn Olesen has held his nerve to claim the second European Tour win of his young career at the ISPS Handa Perth International at Lake Karrinyup Country Club today.

Olesen was ahead by as many as four shots this morning after moving to 17 under, but bogeys on the 10th and 12th saw the 24-year-old drop back to 15 under through 12 holes.

French star Victor Dubuisson made a late charge, with four birdies on the back nine to finish 14 under for the tournament and reduce the young Dane’s lead to just one.

But birdies on the 13th and 15th helped Olesen back to a three shot buffer with the final three holes ahead of him. He managed three pars on the tough final three holes to ensure the three-shot victory.

The 24-year-old, who has led the tournament on all but the second day, won the Sicilian Open in 2012 and will pocket close to $300,000 on the back of his comprehensive win in his debut at the $1.75m tournament.

World No.22 Dubuisson was outright second in his first visit to Perth with a six under 66.

Dubuisson was happy with the performance after waking up with a fever.

"It was pretty good," he said.

"I played really well the four days.

"Today, I mean my long game was really, really, really good.

"I still missed a lot of putts that could have made the difference, but 66 is really a good round.

"I had a lot of birdies, so it was really a nice round."

England’s Mark Foster was outright third, going three under today to finish at 12 under to make it a European trifecta.

WA’s Stephen Dartnall finished his tournament at 11 under as the best-placed local, with fellow Australian Matthew Griffin another in a tie for fourth.

Course record holder James Morrison, who carded 63 on Friday, finished with bogeys on his final two holes to also fall to 11 under for the tournament with another Dane Lucas Bjerregaard and Scot David Drysdale.

Korean Sihwan Kim, 25, started the day in outright second and parred the opening six holes before a triple bogey on the seventh undid him and saw him fall back to 10 under for the tournament.

Kim, who was bidding to become the second Korean in as many years to win the event, will lose his European Tour card after this result.

WA Open winner New Zealander Ryan Fox was one of the big movers today, going five under to finish at 10 under in a six-way tie for ninth.

Jason Scrivener birdied the 18th to finish his tournament at nine under, alongside tournament favourite Charl Schwartzel.

WA’s Brett Rumford ended at eight under, with 2012 runner American Jason Dufner was at six under after getting through four rounds of golf for the first time in three months.
