Call for police station in Baldivis

Concerned Baldivis mother Sam Heard talks to Kwinana MLA Roger Cook about the need for a police station.

A Baldivis mother believes a police station is needed in the growing suburb after she was left frightened when a burglar attempted to break in to her home.

Mother of three Sam Heard said she and her children would never forget the night a man tried to enter their house during the early morning of August 28 and a greater police presence was needed to deter criminals.

"I was in bed with my partner at the time and he woke up because he heard the gate rattling and stones shuffling, and he jumped out of bed and said 'somebody's trying to get into the house'," she said.

"He was trying to get through the ensuite window and my partner shouted at him and he bolted past the laundry door and went over the back fence."

Ms Heard said her biggest fear was if her partner was not there and the man had gained entry.

She said it was worrying the area did not have a police station, with the population of the suburb expected to be more than 30,000 by 2016.

Kwinana MLA Roger Cook said he and Warnbro MLA Paul Papalia were calling for a police station between Rockingham and Mandurah.

Mr Cook said Baldivis crime statistics from the last financial year were alarming, with dwelling burglaries reaching 229, theft reports at 538, and property damage at 249.

"If we are going to increase the social infrastructure and government infrastructure in the area a police station is simply what has to be done," he said.

However, Mr Cook said he was interested to see how the new policing model would impact crime.

Acting Police Minister John Day said the new police operating model had been smoothly implemented and local police teams in the area were busy forging closer ties with their communities to reduce crime.

"The response and investigation teams, which both received extra staff in Rockingham as part of the new model, have settled into their new roles," he said.
