A Mandurah childcare centre was destroyed by fire overnight.

A fire broke out at midnight at the Cosy Corner Nursery School and Childcare Centre on Hackett Street, causing $300,000 damage.

"It caused a significant amount of damage to the structure and I believe it will have to come down," a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

"At this stage the cause is undetermined. Fire Investigation Officers will conduct an investigation today.

"There is asbestos in the building so that will have to be looked at by local government."

It took 16 firefighters from Mandurah, Rockingham and Murdoch an hour and 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Police were also at the scene.
