A 35-year-old man was hospitalised with burns yesterday after a fire at a Welshpool fibreglass business.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a Radium Street unit about 3.20pm.

Witness reported hearing several loud bangs when the fire broke out.

Pollution response officers monitored the potentially dangerous smoke that billowed from the business for the next hour.

The 35-year-old, believed to the business owner, suffered burns to his hands and arms.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

More than 20 fire crews were at the scene, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Regulation.

Radium Road was closed to the public between Welshpool Road and Railway Parade.

The fire, which was not suspicious, caused about $750,000 worth of damage.

Meanwhile in Bibra Lake, a fire at a seed and grain business caused about $200,000 worth of damage.

The fire is believed to have started in a hopper at the Howson Street premises about 3.30pm.

About 16 fire crews turned out to fight the fire, which has been deemed accidental.
