Bull escapes at Perth Royal Show

A steer escaped from handlers at Perth Royal Show today before being recaptured in a Claremont front yard.

The animal escaped from the trade cattle unloading area about 11.30am.

A witness told The West Australian a woman tried to chase the animal but was knocked onto some pallets. It is understood she was not seriously uninjured.

The witness said the steer jumped a railing and landed on an empty double pram, smashing it. It then ran out of the showground and stopped in the front yard of a nearby house.

The animal was captured and tranquilised.

Royal Agricultural Society of WA chief executive Peter Cooper the immediate response from the RAS livestock team and onsite veterinarian ensured the animal was secured quickly.

“Safety of the animals on site as well as members of the public are our number one priority,” Mr Cooper said.

The RAS will review livestock unloading protocols to minimise the risk of such escapes occurring in the future.
