Rockingham artist-in-residence takes focus

The Rockingham Arts Centre's artist-in-residence program is gaining momentum with a new artist to take up the opportunity next month.

Forrestfield resident and regular Castaways participant Claire Davenhall said she looked forward to showcasing her macro photography and photo montage artworks to Rockingham residents.

Davenhall said because her works were created from small shells on the Rockingham foreshore, she believed it would resonate with residents.

The UP Close project was born from Davenhall wanting to explore photography further, as she usually considered herself a fine artist rather than a photographer.

"The photos tell a story about all the small things I find visually interesting, things that people don't see, because life simply gets in the way of engaging with the environment on this level," she said.

As part of the residency workshops, Davenhall said she would focus on making participants see their environment through different eyes.

"Take a second look for the beauty in even the most mundane of objects," she said.

"The project is aimed at highlighting the coastal city of Rockingham and to bring about a sense of local pride in the works produced."

The residency runs from September 29 to October 25 and will be followed by an exhibition until November 5.
