Gotye's bandmate likely to run in election

Gotye won't be entering parliament but his bandmate, Kris Schroeder, is likely to if The Basics' Rock `N' Roll Party gains enough members to register for the upcoming Victorian state election.

Speaking to AAP on Thursday, Schroeder said all three members of the The Basics band, Gotye (Wally De Backer), Tim Heath and Schroeder, are involved in the formation of the Basics Rock'n'Roll Party (BRRP).

He said they had not yet decided who would be going forward for the nomination of representative if the party received enough members.

"The way that things will be structured as a party are still yet to be put into stone," Schroeder said.

In order to be in contention for the November 29 election, the party needs 500 members registered with the Victorian Electoral Commission .

Once a party is registered a president is then voted on.

Schroeder said there is no one candidate nominated to lead the party at that stage.

"I'm not sure if we want a president, I don't know if we want it to be that centralised. We're all pretty passionate about what we're doing," he said.

"At the moment, the longer you can sort of keep it decentralised, the truer it is to the sense of what we're trying to do."

However on Friday morning, Gotye, aka Wally De Backer, took to the triple J airwaves to put paid to the idea that he would be the one entering the political ring.

"I am not running for Parliament in Victoria as some publications have been, not even implying, but actually stating," he said on the radio.

De Backer named Schroeder as the likely candidate to represent the party.

"The facts are that my other band, The Basics, with my good friends and musical cohorts Tim Heath and Kris Schroeder, have considered forming a political party in Victoria called The Basics Rock and Roll Party," he said.

"As of the moment, the party doesn't exist, we have not registered yet, we have got almost the membership interest to be able to register that party.

"We're interested to do it, and if we do so, my bandmate Kris Schroeder will be the candidate for that part to aim for the legislative council in Victoria," he said.

De Backer said the formation of the party was an initiative of Schroeder's, but he and Heath were supportive of him in their shared interest in local and state politics.

"We've certainly talked about the initiatives we'd hope to bring some interest to," he said.
