The AFL’s staging controversy has ignited a social media sledging battle between two of Australia’s most celebrated sportsmen.
Aussie cricket legend Shane Warne has taken a swipe at Sydney Swans AFL player Adam Goodes on Twitter for ‘staging’ for free kicks.
During the stoush, Warne also expressed his shock that Goodes was the reigning Australian of the Year – an award he won back in January.
It all started during last night’s match between Goodes’ Swans and Warne’s favourite club Richmond.
Warnie sent out the following tweet during the game:
Come on tigers beat those Swans and make the finals. By the way, does everyone get annoyed when Adam Goodes always "stages" for free kicks ?— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) August 30, 2014
He then replied to Australian captain Michael Clarke with his disbelief that Goodes was Aussie of the Year:
.@MClarke23 I think Syd or the Hawks will win the flag. Shocked as I just found out Goodes was Aust of the year, wow ! Who votes for that ?— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) August 30, 2014
Goodes then replied this morning: “Thanks for your support mate maybe ask @gilly381 [Adam Gilchrist] who votes for it he is the chair of the Australia Day Council”, to which Warne replied:
.@adamroy37 Just stop staging for free kicks mate. You should be better than that as Aust of the year !!! Good luck in the finals 👍— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) August 31, 2014
The stoush is the latest incidence of an AFL star being accused of staging, or playing for free kicks. Geelong’s Jimmy Bartel and North Melbourne’s Lindsey Thomas have also been in hot water at various stages during the season over staging.
Richmond managed to upset Sydney to grab the final spot in the AFL finals, which start next weekend.
