Charges laid over police assault

A man who allegedly sprayed a police officer in the face with pepper spray before crashing into a police car has been charged.

The 28-year-old Thornlie man, who was wanted on two arrest warrants, is alleged to have used the spray while officers tried to arrest him on Yale Road in Canning Vale on Wednesday.

A police officer was hospitalised and incapacitated after the incident which happened while the officer was conducting patrols in the area at about 2.45pm.

The man is alleged to have been involved in a physical altercation when police approached in him in his 2002 Holden Rodeo ute and, after spraying the officer, is alleged to have reversed at speed into the door of a police car before driving away.

The ute was found abandoned and was seized at a Thornlie property on Wednesday night and the man, who is known to police, was arrested yesterday.

The man has been charged with two counts of breaching bail, driver failing to give his name and address to police, assault with intent to prevent arrest, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm or prevent arrest, driving while unlicensed or disqualified, driver failing to stop after a traffic incident where property damage has occurred, reckless driving and wounding.

He will appear in Armadale Magistrate’s Court today.
