A woman aged in her 30s is dead and a man in his 40s is injured after a crash in Bibra Lake this morning.

The crash happened about 8.20am when a silver Mitsubishi Triton utility and a white Hyundai Excel collided on North Lake Road near Discovery Drive.

Police said the woman was travelling north and the man was driving south when the ute crossed the median strip to the other side of the road and the cars collided.

Firefighters had to cut the woman's body from the Hyundai.

There was debris strewn across the road for more than 50m.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services earlier confirmed crews used extrication equipment to try to free the man who was trapped in his crashed Mitsubishi ute.

He was taken to Fremantle Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

The injured man's girlfriend told Seven News the Barrow Island FIFO worker was on his way to the airport.

St John Ambulance said an onlooker is believed to have given the victim CPR before paramedics arrived on the scene.

North Lake Road is closed northbound near Discovery Drive and southbound at Phoenix Road.

Major Crash investigators have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
