The Arson Squad is investigating a fire that engulfed a Balcatta property last night.

Police were called to a disturbance near the corner of Sylvia Street and Milton Avenue at 11.35pm.

"The call related to a number of people arguing in the street," a police spokesman said.

"Information was also received about possible smoke coming from a unit linked to the people arguing."

Emergency services crews were called and the occupants were out of the Sylvia Street home when firefighters arrived.

It took 16 firefighters 20 minutes to put out the blaze, a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

Damage is estimated at $300,000.

"An initial assessment of the fire scene was undertaken and Arson Squad detectives were advised," the police spokesman said.

"The unit remains under police guard and Arson Squad detectives are attending this morning to conduct a further assessment."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
