Jolly good show, chaps

The cast of hit period drama Downton Abbey have poked fun at their recent water bottle incident.

A promotional image for the series' fifth series featuring Robert, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and his daughter Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) was released last week featuring a plastic water bottle on the mantelpiece.

Fans of the show were quick to notice the mistake and posted a number of parodies on social media.

The show's cast have since poked fun at the photo by posing with the water bottle to promote the work of WaterAid, an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation.

"After seeing the reaction the picture caused earlier this week, the cast and crew came up with the idea of turning some of this attention towards an issue around water that really matters," an ITV spokesperson said.

"They hope that by posing for this picture they will be able to raise awareness and amplify the work of international charity - WaterAid."

A Downton Abbey spokesperson said: "It's testament to the huge success of Downton that something like this makes headlines around the world. While the water bottle is in the uncropped version of a publicity photograph we can assure you that it will not be making an appearance on screen."

The new series of Downton Abbey will screen on Seven/ GWN7 next year.
