Cometti: Dockers shine in defeat

Cometti: Comfortably my worst yet ...

Fremantle got their mojo back on Saturday night.

Okay, they didn't get the four points. But the Dockers certainly made the point they're not a spent force.

It was a bold showing that deserved better.

I'm not sure if I'm David Mundy I want the coach telling me there are four seconds left on the clock. Then again, what if I was contemplating either a short pass or playing on? In hindsight, Ross Lyon had no alternative.

Besides, I'm sure David Mundy has much better nerves than me.

He didn't miss by much, when at the same time I was hiding behind a hotel couch. I know he didn't miss by much only because I came out to watch the replay.

But it follows that that kick and its nearness to the goal might now become a metaphor for the season itself.

A premiership became so much harder to win on the back of one kick.

The Dockers' hopes of being at home in week one of the finals looks almost impossible.

As strange as it sounds, Hawthorn might be the most vulnerable of the teams above them. And guess who are coming to Perth next Sunday?

Yet realistically, and with each of the three teams above Fremantle having lost only four games, there's nothing to suggest a catastrophe of the magnitude required is imminent.

Seems Lyon's maxim of "anywhere, any time" will again be put to the test.
