It took almost two hours to rescue the woman after she fell 40m down stairs.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said the woman was carried out of the cave on a stretcher after rescue crews determined it was not safe to winch her out.

The 72-year-old is being treated at a local hospital for a minor back injury.

The incident occurred at Lake Cave on Conto road, near the intersection of Caves Road, in Boranup.

The RAC Rescue helicopter was sent to the popular tourist destination about 1.30pm today.
