Heagney fires on return for Baysie

David Heagney’s return from an overseas trip has sparked an emphatic return to form for Bayswater City in soccer’s National Premier Leagues WA.

Heagney hit a hat-trick in his first game back as Bayswater thrashed Perth Glory at Intiga Stadium on Saturday.

Perth SC ensured the race for the NPL WA title remained alive and well by beating Stirling Lions 2-1 at Macedonia Park to keep Bayswater in their sights.

Bayswater are two points clear of Perth with just two games of the regular season to play.

Former Huddersfield and St Johnstone striker Heagney wasted no time getting back into the goal-scoring groove to take his season tally to 13.

“I’ve been itching to get back and start playing and to get the hat-trick today is a great feeling,” he said.

“I joined this club to help them win the league and I want to be a winner and we’re all focused on doing that this season.”

Bayswater, who take on Melbourne Victory in a Westfield FFA Cup clash at the WA Athletics Stadium on August 20, dominated the young Glory side from start to finish, with Todd Howarth (two) and Paul McCarthy also getting in on the goal-scoring act.

Perth were in front early against Stirling, who take on Brisbane Roar in their FFA Cup match on August 19, thanks to Ash Rosindale’s goal after just seven minutes.

But David Micevski levelled for the Lions before Mark Doninger grabbed an 85th-minute winner.

In other games, Inglewood United held off Subiaco to claim a 4-3 win, ECU Joondalup edged out Armadale 2-1, and Benny Kouakou scored twice to give Balcatta a 2-1 win over Cockburn City. Floreat Athena host Sorrento at Litis Stadium today (3pm kick-off).
