Fiery end to police chase

A 58-year-man allegedly punched a police officer in the face after a fiery end to an overnight pursuit.

It is alleged the man was behind the wheel of a Ford Falcon which drove off after police tried to pull over the vehicle on Wright Street in Kewdale at about 8.30pm.

Police chased the car on Orrong Road and Graham Farmer Freeway north through the Northbridge tunnel.

The pursuit ended when flames erupted from the man's vehicle near the Powis Street exit on Mitchell Freeway.

Police allege the driver hit a male officer in the face before he was arrested.

He was taken to Cannington Police Station and charged with failing to stop, assaulting a public officer and reckless driving.

He will appear in court at a later date.
