Woman dies after being held by police

A 22-year-old woman has died after being held in police custody in South Hedland.

At 12.30pm the woman told officers at South Hedland Police Station she was feeling unwell.

She was taken to Hedland Health Campus where her condition deteriorated and she died.

Because the woman had been in police custody prior to her death, officers from the Internal Affairs Unit will investigate her death as a death in police custody.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
