Karnet prison escapee recaptured

A Karnet Prison Farm inmate on the run for nine days has been recaptured at a house in Gosnells.

Detectives from the Regional Investigations Unit arrested Michael Hayward this morning.

Hayward escaped custody whilst being transported from Armadale Hospital back to Karnet Prison Farm after attending a medical appointment.

The convicted burglar and robber cut his hand while working in the prison’s abattoir.

Last week his mother Lorraine Nannup appealed for him to give himself up.

Ms Nannup said she was concerned for her son’s safety and health.

“Can you do the right thing, you are putting the family through too much,” she said.

“I don’t want you getting hurt, you are hurting everyone around you, please son, please hand yourself in,” Ms Nannup said.

“I love you and support you all the way, just do the right thing son.”
