Woman dies after carpark altercation

A 29-year-old woman has died after an alleged altercation in a Kununurra carpark last night.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the carpark of a shopping centre in Konkerberry Drive around 7.45pm to investigate a woman allegedly "armed with a knife and acting in a threatening manner".

"At the same time, police who were on patrol and not aware of the disturbance were entering the same carpark and located two women, one of them armed with a knife," the spokesman said.

"As they were approaching the two women they saw the armed woman move towards the victim with the knife. The victim was then found to have a serious stab wound to her chest."

The two police officers - one with taser drawn and the with a firearm drawn - approached the armed woman.

"They challenged the armed woman, who subsequently surrendered the knife and was taken into custody," the police spokesman said.

"An ambulance was called, however despite the efforts of the attending police officers, witnesses and St John Ambulance personnel, the 29-year-old injured woman died at the scene."

It is not known if the women knew each other.

Major Crime Squad detectives and forensic officers from Perth are travelling to Kununurra today to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
