Two people have been airlifted to hospital after a fire on a bulk carrier ship berthed off Port Hedland.

It is understood the fire started in the engine room of the Panamanian-flagged MV Marigold about 3pm.

The ship was berthed at Finucane Island.

Fire crews flooded the engine room with halon gas and sealed the hatch.

Two workers were rushed to Hedland Health Campus in a BHP helicopter.

The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but there are reports it was started by an explosion in the engine room.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said firefighters would monitor the situation overnight.

The ship is not blocking the channel.
