Samsung reveals tablet challenge to Apple

Samsung reveals tablet challenge to Apple.

Korean giant Samsung's attempt to challenge Apple's dominance of the tablet market will be released in Australia later this month for a base price of $599.

The electronic company's Australian representatives revealed this morning its flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S, which it labelled its "thinnest and lightest design to date", would hit the shelves on July 14.

The product will come in a 10.5-inch and 8.4-inch size models.

The company is trying to distinguish itself from Apple's dominant iPad product, promoting its "extremely high-definition screen" and fast processing speeds as a differentiator.

However in contrast to smartphone sales where the Samsung-used Android system dominates, Apple holds a strong lead over the Google-backed system in tablet sales across Australia.

According to a recent report from research group Telsyte, Apples tablet sales grew by 52 per cent to 2.6 million in 2013.

Android media tablet sales grew by 186 per cent, with more than 1.9 million devices purchased over the same period.

Early reviews suggest the Samsung tablet will continue to chip away at Apple's dominance.

Samsung said the Galaxy Tab S will be available in both 16GB and 32GB options.
