Crash driver 'six times over limit'

An alleged drink driver was almost six times over the limit when he crashed his car into a street light pole, police say.

The man allegedly crashed his Hyundai near the corner of Hester Avenue and Connolly Drive, in Merriwa, at about 11:20pm yesterday.

Police spokesman Samuel Dinnison said an ambulance was called but the driver refused treatment.

"The driver was taken to Clarkson Police Station for a breath test and it will be alleged he recorded a reading almost six times the 0.05% legal limit," he said.

The man collapsed while he was being processed and was given first aid by police until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Joondalup Health Campus where police were later told he was sleeping off his intoxication.

The 40-year-old man is expected to be charged by summons.
