They suffered a tragic miscarriage shortly after appearing on House Rules last year. But heartbreak has turned into happiness for season one favourites Jemma Blenkinsop and Ben Van Ryt, who have revealed they are expecting a baby.

The Perth couple, who were sent packing after the garden round on the Seven show last year, told New Idea they were thrilled at the prospect of becoming first-time parents.

"We were so excited, because we lost a baby at 12 weeks previously," Blenkinsop, who is now five months pregnant, said.

Van Ryt added that seeing the first ultrasound was "unbelievable".

"It was a little nerve-racking but once we were told everything was good, we could relax and enjoy the experience," he said.

Though their Melville home underwent a full renovation last year, the duo have been busy prepping a space for their new addition and said they would add a hint of pink or blue to the neutral room, depending on the baby's gender.

Blenkinsop and Van Ryt also discussed how they felt they would fare as parents when the bub arrived.

"Ben will be a great dad but I don't think he knows what he's in for just yet," Blenkinsop laughed.

Van Ryt said he was up for the challenge of sleepless nights and added he thought his wife's caring nature would transition well to her new role as a mother.
