Fatal crash noise 'chilling': resident

One dead, three hurt in crash

A 32-year-old man died early this morning after the Suzuki Swift he was in crashed into another car in Cloverdale.

A police spokeswoman said the white Swift hatchback collided with a silver Toyota Camry sedan at the intersection of Abernethy Road and Fulham Street.

The 32-year-old passenger in the Swift died as a result of injuries he received in the crash. The 33-year-old male driver received extensive serious injuries and remains in hospital.

A 22-year-old female driver of the Toyota and a 16-year-old female passenger were both seriously injured in the crash and admitted to hospital.

Cathryn Pannell, who lives about 100m from the intersection, heard the collision and said the sound was "chilling".

"It wasn't long after the sirens came so I knew it was an accident," Ms Pannell said. "Coming here today and seeing it is pretty awful."

Ms Pannell said the intersection of Abernethy Road and Fulham Street was notorious for accidents.

"It does happen often, especially at these (traffic) lights," she said. "It's two straight roads and people speed both ways and don't pay much attention to the other direction, whether the lights are green or red."

Ms Pannell's partner Kevin Clemesha said a barrier on the same corner where last night's crash occurred had only just been replaced.

"There was an accident about six months ago when they took out the barrier and they've just put this one back in," he said.

"You see it all the time but it doesn't seem to make them slow down.

"Quite often on a Saturday night you hear a lot of cars flying up and down this street.

"Now somebody's life is gone, probably just to beat that car to get around the corner."

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or either vehicle prior to the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
