She might be one of Hollywood's hottest young stars but Margot Robbie hasn't forgotten where she came from.

The 23-year-old Aussie actress, who shot to fame after appearing in last year's The Wolf of Wall Street, has given her mum Sarie Kessler the ultimate 60th birthday present, paying off the $490,000 mortgage on Kessler's Gold Coast home.

Kessler bought the house in 2007, the same year that Robbie graduated from high school and a year before her debut on long-running soap opera Neighbours.

Robbie, who is living and working between London and the US, flew back to Australia last weekend to surprise her mum.

"It was an amazing thing (that Margot did) but I don't want to say anything more about it," Kessler told a Gold Coast newspaper. "I am immensely proud of her. She is a fine young woman and she is directly focused and she sets goals and achieves them. I'm just so proud - we all are. It was definitely the best birthday ever."

But Kessler added she wasn't so pleased with her son Lockie spreading the news on his social media accounts. "I was really disappointed it ended up on social media as it was a personal present," she added.

Lockie posted a picture of his mother and sister celebrating with champagne outside the three-bedroom, two-storey brick home.

"Mum turned 60 today and for her prezzy Margot has paid off mum's mortgage," he wrote.
