Driver charged after crash with train

A 26-year-old man, who had a lucky escape after his car was hit by a train last night, has been charged with dangerous driving.

Police allege the Henley Brook man crashed with another car at the intersection Albany Highway and John Street in Bentley before he ploughed through a fence onto the Armadale Line, south of Welshpool Station just after 9pm.

It is alleged the man continued driving and crashed with rail property.

But the man was not injured, and managed to escape the wrecked car before it was hit by an oncoming train at low speed.

A witness said the same car had rear-ended him on nearby Albany Highway a few minutes before and the driver had appeared to be drunk.

The man has been charged with dangerous driving, refusing a breath test, failing to remain at the scene of a crash and having no driver’s licence.

The crash left the Armadale line blocked for around 90 minutes last night, as transit officers and firefighters attempted to clear the debris.
