Dozens of people were evacuated from a block of units after a fire broke out this morning.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services and police were called to the residential building on Newcastle Street in Northbridge about 5am.

About 50 people were evacuated from the units.

The fire is believed to have started in a pile of boxes outside the building, but police and the Arson Squad are investigating.

The fire caused minor damage.

"When deemed safe, occupants were allowed to return to their units," police said.
