Daniel Radcliffe has revealed he often showed up on set drunk while filming Harry Potter.

After shooting to fame at the age of 11 when he was cast as the boy wizard, the actor turned to booze when he was filming because he was struggling to cope with the pressure of his new celebrity.

In a new interview that will air on Sky Arts later this year, Radcliffe said he would regularly step into character while still intoxicated from his antics the night before.

"I would have benefited from not drinking as it was not making me as happy as I wanted it to," the 24-year-old said.

"It is not a real pressure but it is a pressure of living with the thought 'Oh, what if all these people are saying I am not going to have a career? What if they are all going to be right and will be laughing and I will be consigned to a bunch of 'Where are they now' lists?"

Radcliffe has been sober since 2010 after previously revealing he had become too reliant on alcohol and even blacked out on a number of occasions.

While he has gone on to receive critical acclaim for his post-Harry Potter work, Radcliffe still credits the series for kickstarting his career.

"People don't shout Harry Potter at me now, they tend to know my name, which is lovely," he said. ". . . (but) I always will credit the opportunities I get to Harry Potter."
