A two-year-old girl has been hit and killed by a reversing car driven by her mother.

Detectives from the Major Crash squad are investigating the tragedy, but believe it was a terrible accident.

Two other children, both aged less than 10, were in the Peugeot wagon at the time.

The accident happened just after 10am on Holley Place, near Atala Place, Marangaroo.

It is understood neighbours heard girls screaming and ran outside.

One neighbour desperately tried to revive the little girl until paramedics arrived but she was pronounced dead at Joondalup Health Campus.
