York speeder was 'running late'

A 49-year-old Kalgoorlie man allegedly caught doing nearly 50km/h over the speed limit near York yesterday told police he was “running late”.

The man was driving a blue Holden Colorado towards Perth on Great Eastern Highway in The Lakes when he was pulled over by York Police about 10pm.

It will be alleged he was clocked doing 129km/h in an 80km/h zone.

His car was impounded for 28 days and he will be charged under hoon legislation with reckless driving.

York Police officer in charge Sgt Mark Gubanyi said it was disappointing to see drivers putting their lives at risk.

“Today marks two years since we’ve had a fatal crash in the York sub-district which is a big effort on behalf of the community.
“At that speed, if something occurred it would be devastating for someone,” he said.
