Baseball bat wielding thugs are believed to be behind a random attack on a 46-year-old man in Cooloongup early yesterday.

The truck driver is understood to have told police he was ambushed by two men wearing hoodies while sitting in his vehicle on Maitland Close about 2am.

He suffered fractures to his eye socket, jaw, nose and cheekbone in the attack.

The man will require reconstructive surgery on his face.
