Dangerous driving charge for cow crash

Bail granted for cow crash driver

The driver of a car involved in a fatal crash when the vehicle hit a cow near Derby has appeared in court charged with dangerous driving occasioning death under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A 13-year-old girl, one of four people in the car, died in the crash.

Jeffrey Graham Howard, 43, appeared in Broome Magistrate's Court today.

Mr Howard was allegedly driving a Suzuki Swift on the Derby Highway about 7.50pm on December 20, 2013, about 25km south of the town, when it struck the animal.

The crash caused significant damage to the vehicle. The other three occupants suffered serious injuries.

A 13-year-old girl died later in Broome Hospital.

Magistrate Steven Sharratt said the certificate of analysis (alcohol/drugs) would need to be examined by lawyers before his next appearance in Broome Magistrates’ Court on July 11.
