Perth band Birds of Tokyo lead the nominees for the 2014 APRA Music Awards alongside Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy.

The chart-topping rock quintet, which is midway through a marathon North American tour, has four nominations in the peer-voted honours, including one in the coveted Song of the Year category for their hit, Lanterns.

Vance Joy, whose real name is James Keogh, also has four nominations.

His Triple J Hottest 100 winning song Riptide is a strong contender for Song of the Year.

The other Song of the Year nominees are the Drones, the Preatures and Matt Corby with Canadian co-writer Dominic Salole.

Both Lanterns and Riptide are among the finalists in the Most Played Australian Work category, alongside hits from Corby, Sheppard and Nathaniel.

Birds of Tokyo have two songs nominated for Rock Work of the Year, as has former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning.

Besides the Birds and the Drones, which formed in Perth before relocating to Melbourne in 2000, other WA artists featuring in the annual gongs include John Butler Trio, Samantha Jade, Chelsea Basham and Luke Steele's Empire of the Sun.

All have nominations in genre-based categories.

Hits from Robin Thicke, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Swedish House Mafia, Passenger and Bastille will compete for the International Work of the Year title.

Former Go-Betweens drummer and musicians' advocate Lindy Morrison will receive the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music.

The winners will be announced in Brisbane on June 23.
