Gas leak forces second evacuation

Gas leak forces office evacuation

City streets and a CBD building have been reopened after a gas scare earlier today.

A suspected gas leak forced the evacuation for the second time in a week.

Workers were evacuated from the St Georges Terrace office building after reporting a strong smell of gas at about 10.45am.

Two west-bound lanes on the Terrace and one north-bound lane on Mills Street are closed to traffic.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area as fire crews tried to find the source of the leak.

The same building was evacuated following a gas leak last week.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the area was now safe but the cause of the leak is not known.
