Worker dies in mine accident

UPDATE 1.55pm: A 63-year-old Boulder man has died at the Brightstar Mine near Laverton yesterday morning in a workplace accident.

Authorities were advised of the death about 10.20am.

Mines Safety director Andrew Chaplyn said it is believed a male worker was fatally injured while operating machinery, believed to be a forklift.

A Mines Safety inspector is travelling to the mine from Kalgoorlie to begin an investigation.

Two lead investigators will travel to Kalgoorlie today and will join the inspector at the mine site tomorrow.

Police are also on site and are assisting with the investigation.

Chinese-owned Stone Resources operates the Brightstar mine but declined to comment.

The man is employed by CPC Engineering, who did not immediately return calls.

It is the second mining death in the Goldfields this year following the death of 59-year-old Wayne Fowlie in an underground rock fall at Central Norseman Gold’s Harlequin mine on February 15.

There have been five deaths at WA mine sites since the State experienced a fatality-free year during 2012.
