Rain reason to be water wise

The Water Corporation is urging households to switch off reticulation systems before the winter sprinkler ban after recent rain and forecasts of more downpours.

The call from the State-owned utility came as it released figures showing there had been a 15 per cent jump in the number of customers fined for flouting sprinkler restrictions in the past year.

The Water Corp said that between July 1 last year and May 19, it had issued 1820 infringements, each for $100, to households caught using sprinklers outside of their rostered days.

The utility handed out 1569 infringements for the 2012-13 financial year.

A spokeswoman said the two-day-a-week sprinkler roster, introduced in 2001 to prop up Perth's drinking supplies, saved up to 54 billion litres a year. Even though the winter sprinkler ban was not due for another 10 days, she urged households to turn their systems off early.
