Hash brown a clue in burglary

Forensic investigators undertook a DNA test on a half-eaten hash brown to track down a suspected burglar.

Police allege Paolo Verteramo bit into the hash brown after illegally entering an East Victoria Park home on April 5.

The occupant of the Swansea Street home stumbled upon the 39-year-old who allegedly fled the scene.

The Perth Magistrates Court was told on Monday that Mr Verteramo had been taking the anti-anxiety drug Xanax and couldn’t remember the incident.

He had been suffering depression following the death of his young daughter last year, the court heard.

Mr Verteramo was bailed to reappear in court on June 9.
