Police are investigating a high-speed crash in Wembley that appears to be the result of a drag race.

It is understood the accident happened as a V8 utility and a silver sedan were driving along Grantham Street in Wembley about 1am.

The utility hit another car near the Daglish Street intersection and crashed into the back fence of a house, narrowly missing a bus stop.

A police spokesman said the driver of the utility ripped the number plates from the car and got into the passenger seat of the sedan.

The sedan was last seen driving towards Cambridge Street.

No one was home at the time and the drivers all escaped serious injury.

A nearby neighbour said the utility had hit a small car and sent it spinning out of control.

“It was only a young guy driving and he was really shaken,” she said.

“It all started a long way down the street.”

She said the driver of the utility started acting aggressively when he was approached by people after the crash.

The crash destroyed the back fence of the home as well as a number of plants and a small wall in the backyard.

The utility has been impounded by police.

Inquiries are continuing.
