Australian shot dead in Argentina: reports

An Australian tourist has reportedly been shot dead in Argentina during an attempted bag-snatch robbery.

The victim was with two other tourists, an Australian woman and a French man, when they were attacked on Monday, according to local media reports.

The thieves tried to grab the Australian's backpack but he resisted and there was a struggle and the man fell to the ground.

A shot was fired and the thieves fled on a motorbike.

The Australian reportedly died at the scene.

The Argentina Independent reports the trio were visiting the Parque General San Martín, in the city of Mendoza, around 1,000km west of Buenos Aires.

According to initial reports, the man was shot at least twice, in the chest and neck.

Mendoza police chief Juan Carlos Caleri said the force have launched a search for the suspects, identified by witnesses as two young males.
