Charges laid over Newdegate crash death

A 24-year-old East Victoria Park man has been accused of fleeing the scene after striking a pedestrian just outside Newdegate last month.

Louis Athan, 49, was killed after his Holden HSV GTS sedan crashed into a tree near the intersection of Newdegate-Ravensthorpe Road and Old Ravensthorpe Road.

His body was found by a German backpacker on the morning of Sunday, March 30.

In the days after his death, major crash investigators said Mr Athan had walked about two kilometres towards town before he was struck by two vehicles.

Yesterday, police charged the East Victoria Park man with failing to stop and ensure assistance after a traffic incident.

He was also charged with failing to report the incident to police.

He is scheduled to appear in the Narrogin Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 6.
