Two children have been found dead and a man has been taken into custody at a property in Melbourne’s north-east.
Police said the two children were found dead at the Longmuir Road address in Watsonia and a man was arrested at the scene just after 2.30pm.
The two children are believed to be sisters, both under the age of ten.
The man is now being interviewed by police.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the deaths, but it is believed they are known to each other.
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the holidays were a time for families to be together.
"It's a time for families to get together and enjoy each other's company, and this will have a significant impact on friends, on family," he said at the scene.
Mr Crisp said a number of people were present at the home at the time of the incident.
"It's first of all impacted on friends, neighbours, and also on members of the fire brigade and the ambulance services and members of Victoria Police that have attended the scene."
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were called to treat two patients in a critical condition just before 3pm.
The patients were worked on by paramedics for some time at the scene, but could not be saved, the spokesman said.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene.
