WA rivals remain on course for boxing final
UPDATE: Western Australia is on track to provide both finalists in the men's 64kg category at the national amateur boxing championships in Fremantle after Danny Heyes and Callum Cassidy won their quarter-finals tonight.
For the second day running Cassidy's bout ended early for a cut and once again he got the nod.
The Bradricks fighter needed medical clearance on a cut over his left eye before he was allowed to face No.1-ranked South Australian David Biddle today.
This time it was Cassidy's opponent who suffered the facial cut following an accidental head clash. And after it was decided the rugged Biddle was unable to continue following the first-round collision, the West Aussie was awarded the bout 2-1.
That keeps him on track to face Heyes, the man he just lost out to in the State final earlier this year.
Heyes (Mandurah BC) was too good for Queensland's Mitchell Coomer, running out a 3-0 winner.
Two other WA boxers enjoyed success at the Esplanade Hotel tonight. Jordan Samadarli (Devellerez BC) got past Uria Afamasaga (Tas) 3-0 at 81kg, while at 60kg Matt Linsley (Petersons) beat Rhys Evans (Qld) 2-1.
But the dreams of a national glory and a possible seat on the plane to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games ended for Fano Kori (Cuban 69kg), Daniel Emery (Subiaco PCYC 75kg) and Brad Staphorst (Subiaco PCYC 81kg).
Earlier it had been a mixed morning session for WA's elite women, who are chasing a spot at the world championships.
Bec O'Shaughnessy (Mach 1 48kg) progressed to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Marizza Medcalf (NSW).
But Kylie Fulmer (Petersons 51kg) saw her hopes snuffed out as she went down 2-1 to Queenslander Cherneka Johnson.
